The legend of young NaeSmith: There once was a young lad who served as a squire for a great lord. One night, before a great battle, he was cleaning and preparing his lord's armor. He noticed a crack in the handle of the martel, or "war hammer". The young lad was not a smith, but decided to try and repair the handle of the war hammer himself. He did his best and thought that the handle would hold. The next day, there were sound of commotion coming from the battle field. The battle had begun. The young lad ran to the side of his lord. The young lad handed the lord his war hammer, but as soon as he began to swing the heavy war hammer, the handle broke. The lord was in danger of being killed, so the young lad went to the lord's aid by grabbing a sword and fighting heroically beside his lord. Without the training as a knight, this young lad waded through the battle field and dispatched several of their enemies. The lord later chastised him for not telling him about the broken war hammer, but he appreciated what the young squire had done for him. In a loud voice, before the assembled knights, he said " although ye are nae smyth, ye are a brave gentleman". In grateful thanks, the young squire earned his honor that day. The coat of arms showed the broken martel, or war hammer and the young squire's hand grasping the sword that saved the day. This gave the family the legend. The coat of arms also bore the motto, "Not by skill, but by arms". Through the young squire's prowess, great daring, and achievements in battle, he was knighted by the Lord, with this laconic saying, "Although he is nae smith (no smith), he is a brave gentleman".
