Goss line 2
If you think that the Goss / Pemberton line was confusing at the beginning, then I have a second Goss line that will do a better job in confusing you. Please do not view this page and read it until you view and read the Goss / Pemberton page. This page has to do with Nancy Ann Goss lines and how they connect back into the Goss / Pemberton line. Remember that John E. Pemberton married or became partners to Nancy Ann Goss after he married or became partners to her mother, Frances "Fanny" Goss. Frances "Fanny" Goss was previously married or became partners to a Bastld Goss and they had only one child, and that was Nancy Ann Goss.
Note: A marriage license was not required until July 1, 1911 and their are questions as to whether Fanny and Bastld, Fanny and John E Pemberton, or Nancy and John E Pemberton were ever legally married. So, the word "partner" might be more appropriate.

Okay, this is were it gets interesting. The father of Bastld Goss, Bryant Goss, and the father of Frances "Fanny" Goss, Mason Goss, were brothers. So, Frances "Fanny" Goss married her first cousin.
Here is a simple pedigree chart so you can visualize it better:
Also, the reason why Sampson S. Goss is not Sampson S. Pemberton is that his father John E Pemberton Jr. gave his children the option to take their mother's maiden name for their surname with (for both of his marriages). So, Sampson S. Goss and all his siblings took their mothers maiden name, Goss, as their surnames. Apparently, none of the children from his first wife, Frances "Fanny", nor the children from his second wife, Nancy Ann Goss, took the Pemberton surname.
The second Goss line starts from Nancy Ann Goss (the second wife of John E Pemberton Jr.).
Nancy Ann Goss married or became partners of John E Pemberton about 1850 in Barnwell, South Carolina at the age of 18 years old. John was 49 years old at the time. John was previously married or became partners to Frances "Fanny" Goss, Nancy Ann's mother. Fanny was married or became partners to John about 1834 (he was 33 and she was 19 years old). Why John left Fanny and married or became partners to Fanny's daughter (John's step-daughter) is uncertain. However, Fanny stayed with John long enough to have children through him. However, the argument as to which children are to which partners is open to debate. We can probably agree that Nancy Ann Goss was the only child through the marriage/partner of Batild Goss and Frances "Fanny" Goss. However, as to the other 15 children, it is hard to determine what union were each child's parents; Fanny and John or Nancy and John. The following are the children listed that could be the product of either unions (John and Fanny or John and Nancy):

Cynthia Secunda Daniel provided this information on ancestry.com:
There are a couple of versions of who his father is - one says a Mathew and another Zachariah. Neither have been proven from what I know. Information also circulates that he had brothers Zachariah and Bryant - this is unverified. There is a document from the Barnwell County Courthouse where Mathew Goss transfers land to Mason Goss.
There are also stories that all these Gosses go back to a Captain John Goss. I'd love to see some documentation on that. I have not personally been able to make that connection. -Cynthia Secunda Daniel
